The Torch River Run will start on March 3 and finish March 6, 2010. It will be ran as an Iditarod qualifier, but will not be a qualifier this year. It will be a “points race” for Ma Mow We Tak members.
The race organizers want to keep the race as simple as possible; therefore it will be a wilderness race. The Torch River Run will run approximately 200 miles with no more than 10 and no less than 8 dogs, and must finish with no fewer than 5 dogs in harness and on the towline. The 6 dog event will run approximately 70 miles with no more than 6 and no less than 5 dogs, and must finish with no fewer than 4 dogs in harness and on the towline. All dogs will be either in the team or in the sled. There will be at least one mandatory rest at a designated checkpoint and drop bags can be sent to some checkpoints. The entry fee will be low: $100 for the 200 mile race and $50 for the 70 mile race if received before December 10/09; $150 and $75 after that date. Race officials are accepting only 15 entries in each race this year, so if interested get your name on the list early. No handler assistance except at the start and finish.
The Torch River Run is going to start at Christopher Lake and follow trails to Candle Lake; the route is planned to then follow trails around the north end of Candle Lake. You will then travel to Caribou Creek finish in the resort Village of Tobin Lake. The 6-dog race starts at Caribou Creek. There are several warm-up shelters and other excellent camping spots over the entire race course. Race officials are still laying out the trail, so there could be changes announced later. At this time they have no information as to a purse, but be prepared to have a fun time!!
